Event 2: Bruin Spacecraft Group Marketing

Bruin Spacecraft Group (shortened as Bruin Space) was officially founded this year: it has existed in name as a parent organization for project ELFIN (Electron Losses and Fields Investigation), a multi-million dollar NASA-funded undergraduate nanosatellite project at UCLA. As ELFIN comes to a close, nanosatellite development at UCLA does too, and Bruin Space was founded to help prevent this. It consists of 4 tiers of projects, from lowest to highest: Sandbox, Overseer, and Reach, and Rapid. Sandbox is a freshman-oriented collection of miscellaneous projects and challenges, Overseer is a high altitude balloon project reaching heights of over 100,000 feet, Reach is a nanosallite-form payload project taking flight aboard an amateur rocket, and Rapid is to develop an ELFIN-level nanosatellite with a new mission. Although Bruin Space sounds like a purely technical project, it is unique and prides itself in its diversity of thought, as it draws in students with non-technical majors to its Sandbox, Marketing, Finance, and External Affairs teams. Sandbox participated in a debate, UCLA vs UC Berkeley, concerning the human race in space exploration. It was live-streamed nationally and had attendees such as the director of NASA AMES. The Marketing, Finance, and External Affairs teams all incorporate the work of students with majors from Design Media Arts to Business to International Relations. As a result, Bruin Space has had a successful brand impact in a short amount of time, resulting in a fully-funded campaign raising over $7,500.

This week I attended a workshop for the Marketing team of Bruin Space's Marketing team. The workshop was directed by the Bruin Space's Vice President of Marketing. We discussed the future of marketing at Bruin Space and reviewed our current tasks. We finished development of shirt designs and decided to start an art campaign at Bruin Space called fuseART featuring art specifically created for the club by members, friends of the club and outside artists. The campaign focuses on incorporating the style of different artists with the vision of the club. I created the image above for this campaign, which will be hosted across the club's social media. We also discussed assisting Rocket Project at UCLA with their brand design, who recently reached out to Bruin Space.

Ultimately, the club, though on the surface may appear purely technical, helps bring together art and technology into one club, focusing on developing the skills of undergraduates.
